Erika Kirk Reveals Haunting Warning She Gave Charlie Night Before His Death

The assassination of Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk at a campus event in Utah has shaken the conservative movement and left his widow, Erika Kirk, struggling with profound grief.
Kirk, 31, was fatally shot in the neck on Sept. 10 while speaking to students at Utah Valley University. The outspoken activist had long been a polarizing figure, drawing both passionate support and fierce opposition. Now, his wife is sharing haunting new details of his final moments, the warnings they discussed before his death, and the devastating call that confirmed her worst fears, the New York Times reported.
In an emotional interview with The Times, Erika said law enforcement urged her not to view her husband’s body because of the damage caused by the bullet. She refused.
“With all due respect, I want to see what they did to my husband,” she told them.
At the hospital, she leaned over his body for a final goodbye. She kissed him one last time, noting his “semi-open eyes” and “Mona Lisa-like half-smile.”
“He’d died happy,” she said. “Like Jesus rescued him. The bullet came, he blinked, and he was in heaven.”
Since that day, Erika admitted she has not been able to sleep in the couple’s bedroom. Instead, she moves from place to place each night, clinging to any reminders of him. She refuses to wash the towels Charlie used in his final shower.
The night before his trip, the couple had dinner with a faith leader to pray over Charlie’s upcoming 20-campus tour. Erika and their friend raised concerns about his safety, especially as death threats had become more frequent over the past year.
Erika urged him to wear a bulletproof vest. Their friend suggested he deliver speeches behind bulletproof glass.
Charlie declined both.
“Not yet,” he told them, trusting his security team and the event’s arrangements. Erika remembered moments when her husband hinted at the risks, almost as though part of him had already accepted the possibility of violence.
Originally, Erika had planned to travel with Charlie to Utah but stayed behind to care for her mother, who was undergoing medical treatment in Phoenix. Charlie reassured her, saying, “Home needs you. We’ll go together to Colorado State.”
The next morning, as she sat in her mother’s hospital room, her phone rang. It was Michael McCoy, Charlie’s longtime assistant. Erika said she knew instantly what had happened.
“In retrospect, I knew it before he screamed it,” she recalled. “‘He’s been shot!’”
Charlie Kirk first met Erika, a former Miss Arizona, in 2018 at a Turning Point event. Soon after, he arranged a meeting in New York, where she was running a Christian-themed clothing line. The encounter, set up under the pretense of a job interview, quickly turned into something more.
Charlie never attended college but was known as a voracious reader. Erika earned her bachelor’s degree at Arizona State University and a master’s in legal studies from Liberty University. Their differences only deepened their admiration for each other, laying the foundation for a marriage built on shared values and faith.
Prosecutors allege that 22-year-old Tyler Robinson carefully plotted the assassination. Investigators said they recovered a handwritten note hidden under his computer keyboard that read, “I had the opportunity to take out Charlie Kirk and I’m going to take it.”
Police also found a photo of the note, along with text messages Robinson exchanged with his roommate, a biological male described in court filings as Robinson’s romantic partner. According to prosecutors, the roommate provided the evidence to police and detailed Robinson’s erratic behavior before the attack.
After the shooting, Robinson allegedly messaged his partner, “I’ve had enough of his hatred.”
Robinson has been charged with aggravated murder, obstruction of justice, witness tampering, and felony discharge of a firearm.
“Charlie lived without fear,” Erika said. “But he also lived for others. That’s how he died, and that’s how he will always be remembered.”
