Frisco, Texas – A tragic scene unfolded at a high school track meet on April 2, 2025, when 17-year-old football star Austin Metcalf was fatally stabbed in front of teammates and family members. The incident took place at David Kuykendall Stadium and has since left the local community devastated.

According to witnesses, the altercation began when Austin Metcalf asked fellow student Karmelo Anthony to move from a section designated for Austin’s team. The situation quickly escalated, and Anthony allegedly responded with violence, stabbing Austin in the chest during the confrontation.
Austin’s identical twin brother, Hunter, was present at the scene and attempted to save his brother’s life. “I put my hand on [his chest], tried to make [the bleeding] stop,” Hunter recalled. “I grabbed his head and I looked in his eyes. I just saw his soul leave. And it took my soul, too.”
Paramedics responded quickly, but Austin succumbed to his injuries on site. Their father, Jeff Metcalf, rushed to the hospital after hearing what had happened, only to be told that his son could not be saved. “I could see all the blood, and I saw where the wound was,” he said. “We prayed… it’s God’s plan, I don’t understand it, but they weren’t able to save him.”
Karmelo Anthony was arrested shortly after the stabbing and has been charged with first-degree murder. According to police reports, Anthony admitted to the attack, reportedly saying, “I’m not alleged. I did it.” He also claimed he acted in self-defense, stating, “I was protecting myself. He put his hands on me.”

Due to Anthony’s age, he will not face the death penalty or life without parole if convicted, in accordance with U.S. Supreme Court rulings regarding minors.
The tragedy has sparked a wave of support for both families. A GoFundMe campaign for the Metcalf family has raised over $316,000, while a separate GiveSendGo fundraiser for Anthony’s legal defense has brought in more than $85,000.
Both families have spoken publicly, emphasizing the potential and character of the two young men involved. The loss of Austin, a beloved athlete and student, has left an indelible mark on the school and community.
