According to Susana Martinez-Conde, director of the visual neuroscience laboratory at Barrow Neurological Institute in Phoenix, Arizona, they are important tools in visual research as they help us understand how visual processing works in both normal and diseased brains.

Patience is key in recognizing that this frog image is actually of a different species! Though this image is not an optical illusion in the strict sense, it has more to do with how your brain functions and perceives images rather than the optics in your eyes.
Mark Changizi, a neurobiologist and assistant professor of cognitive science at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, explains that the brain is constantly constructing things, which helps us survive. Some of these structures could be made up. So, what do you see in the image? Do you simply see a frog sitting on the ground or perhaps at the edge of a pond?
